What is orthokeratology?

Ortho-K uses specially fitted rigid contact lenses worn during sleep to temporarily reshape the front surface of the eye. After the lenses are removed, many wearers can see clearly during the day without glasses or contact lenses. Results vary, and ongoing wear is required to maintain the effect.

Ortho-K and growing eyes

Orthokeratology is one of the approaches used to slow childhood myopia progression. Your doctor will discuss the evidence, the purpose of the proposed lens and whether this approach is appropriate for your child.

Fit, training and follow-up

Care begins with an examination and corneal measurements. Lens fitting and early follow-up help assess vision, comfort and the response of the cornea. Parents and children receive guidance on insertion, removal, cleaning and the prescribed wearing schedule.

Safety is part of the plan

Contact lenses can cause irritation, corneal injury or serious eye infection. Overnight wear requires careful attention to hygiene and monitoring. Follow your doctor's instructions, keep lenses away from tap water and never change the wearing schedule without advice. Pain, redness, light sensitivity or reduced vision require prompt assessment.

Is it right for your child?

Prescription, corneal shape, eye health and the ability to follow lens-care instructions all matter. An examination is the best way to explore suitability.

Evidence behind overnight care

Read the ROMIO randomized clinical trial: this two-year study evaluated axial elongation in children wearing Ortho-K compared with single-vision glasses. The findings support an effect on eye growth in the studied children; they do not guarantee an individual response.
